Remember the days when your parents worked for the same company for years and received health insurance for the entire family, paid time off and sometimes even a company car? All of these items were employee benefits used to attract the best workers and keep them. But employee benefits like group health insurance have gotten much more expensive over the last decade and do not cover everything that they did in the past. Today many of the jobs available are service jobs with a high turn-over rate among its employees.

These days, the workers are expected to bear at least a part of their health insurance costs. Many presidential candidates have talked about the need to cover all Americans but none have come out with a concrete plan and because of the current system it is unlikely that we will see this happening for many years to come.

In case of sickness lasting more than one day their employers often require a note from the doctor before allowing them back to work. These people not only lose pay but must pay to return to work. The premiums of these plans are more affordable. But employees and their family with this type of coverage are responsible for more of their out of pocket expenses. One thing employees with this type of coverage can do to reduce their risk is purchase an affordable medicl insurance gap plan. Medical gap insurance plans will reimburse employees for the major medical expenses that their insurance plan does not cover.
